Jazz Fusion From Newfoundland
A boundary-pushing jazz fusion trio from St. Johns, Newfoundland, blending jazz and global rhythms into a bold, contemporary sound born on the edge of the Atlantic
About us
Based in St. Johns, Newfoundland, Weku is a jazz fusion trio driven by groove, curiosity, and musical freedom. Drawing from jazz traditions while embracing Highlife, Afrobeat, funk, and other global rhythms, the band creates music that is both deeply expressive and rhythmically powerful. Weku (pronounced Weh-kuh) means “family” in Ga, the language spoken by the people of Ghana’s coastal Greater Accra Region
The band features Grant King on guitar, George Gogoe on bass, and Ashley “Big Ash” Chalmers on drums. Hailing from Mount Pearl, Newfoundland; Accra, Ghana; and Montreal, Quebec respectively, the trio brings together a wide range of musical influences that define their unique sound. Rooted in deep listening and interplay, their music unfolds through conversation, groove, and risk-taking, with spontaneity at the core of every performance.
Grounded in Newfoundland’s growing creative scene and influenced by sounds far beyond its shores, Weku bridges local spirit with an international jazz-fusion sensibility. Whether performing on stage or in the studio, the band aims to create immersive musical experiences that connect, move, and inspire
